BIAFRA: [OPINION] : REFERENDUM AND THE NEED FOR SELF-DEFENCE

In a civilized and sane society, the total compliance to the boycott of the November 2017 governorship poll in Anambra state by the Indigenous People of Biafra will hasten a call for dialogue and even referendum by the occupying government. Some may refer to the case of the Catalans in which the occupying Spanish government used force and intimidation in violating the referendum exercise for an independent Catalonia. The rascality of the Spanish government is surely fueled by the conspiratory silence of the European Union, which I deduce it is due to the fact that the de facto Catalonia government was not able to defend its citizens and territory from the powers in Madrid.

The people of Biafra showed compliance to the boycott of Nigerian government organized elections in Biafra Land beginning from the council poll in Enugu State and further showed their grievances in the just concluded Anambra state governorship election. The core purpose of these acts of civil disobedience by Biafrans is to press the demand for a referendum to be organized according to international plebiscite for the purpose of a sovereign state of Biafra. IPOB Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has severally stated that this civil and diplomatic approach is to forestall the need for another war leading to loss of live and properties.

But the Nigeria government has stated severally that it would not mind beginning another war for the sake of “territorial integrity” of the country. The Nigeria security forces under strict directive from President Muhammadu Buhari have continually mete the Biafra people with extra judicial killings and violence. Peaceful demonstrators and protesters are shot at directly with live ammunitions with the intention to kill, even as the possession of Biafra flags and insignias has become treasonable offense in Nigeria. Global human right watchdog, Amnesty International, bears testaments to the extra judicial killings and violence against the people of Biafra by the Nigeria government.

The Nigeria government has shunned the call for referendum by the Biafra people and will deploy means to scuttle any planned referendum for the independence of Biafra. Force and violent will be increased to quell the Indigenous People of Biafra from exercising the right to Self-determination. Any planned referendum without the inclusion of self-defense will not be taken serious by the international community especially proposed allies. The territory and citizens of Biafra must be protected from the invasion, destruction and bloodshed that may arise to thwart the referendum.

Most of the political, religious and traditional leaders of Biafra origin prefer the bloodshed of their people so as to protect their personal ambition. As majority of the Biafran people have chosen to restore their fatherland- Biafra and wishes to prove that via a referendum, they must be protected from the onslaught that might arise. The clamor by the people of Biafra to exercise the right to Self-determination is legitimate but they must show that they are capable of protecting their citizens and territory. The antecedent operations of the Biafra National Guard (BNG) reveal it is capable and willingl to trigger the right to self-defense accordingly as stipulated in the international law.
