A $10,000 financial request allegedly linked to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s instructions while in DSS custody has sparked fresh questions over the use of IPOB funds and the limits of financial authority within the movement.
In an explosive revelation during his Radio Biafra podcast on August 8, 2026, Mazi Chinasa Nworu narrated how the IPOB leadership allegedly resisted and ultimately stopped a request to release $10,000 from the movement's purse to Mazi Benjamin Madubugwu, reportedly for the payment of his children's school fees.
According to Nworu, the controversy began after Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was taken into DSS custody following his rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.
Nworu alleged that messages purportedly originating from Kanu while in detention were repeatedly reaching the leadership, with several of them reportedly containing instructions for money to be released to people around him for various errands.
But according to his account, the leadership eventually became uncomfortable with the nature and frequency of the financial requests.
Then came the $10,000 request.
Nworu claimed that a request was transmitted for the release of $10,000 to Benjamin Madubugwu, allegedly to pay the school fees of his children.
The request reportedly triggered resistance within the leadership.
The question, according to Nworu, was straightforward:
Why should IPOB funds be used to pay the school fees of the children of someone who was neither in prison, seriously ill nor deceased?
The leadership, he alleged, also questioned the amount involved and demanded to know where the children were schooling and whether similar payments had previously been made from IPOB funds.
At today's exchange rates, $10,000 represents several millions of naira, making the alleged request a substantial financial transaction for an organization operating under considerable pressure.
Nworu's account further suggested that the leadership's refusal to comply with some of the alleged instructions coming from DSS custody was based on concerns that blindly executing such orders could expose the organization and its members to financial and operational risks.

The revelation goes beyond the reported $10,000.
It raises fundamental questions about who had authority over IPOB finances, how instructions from detention were authenticated, who approved previous payments, and what financial safeguards existed around the movement's funds.
Were the messages genuinely from Mazi Nnamdi Kanu?
Were the alleged payments isolated incidents or part of a recurring pattern?
Was there documentary authorization for the proposed $10,000 payment?
And were similar requests made on behalf of other individuals?
These questions remain contentious and would require documentary evidence and responses from the persons directly involved before the allegations can be independently established.
Nevertheless, the account has already generated mixed reactions among Biafrans, particularly over the principle of institutional accountability versus obedience to instructions attributed to the movement's detained leader.
For the IPOB leadership, as presented in Nworu's account, the issue was not simply about $10,000—it was about whether the movement's treasury could be accessed on the basis of instructions whose authenticity and purpose were being questioned.
