Remembering The Golden Voice of Freedom -- Chief Okokon Ndem By Comr Onyegbula Solomon, Comr Nwawube Ezeobi | The Biafra Post May 26, 2020 Late Chief Okokon Ndem from Ikoneto in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, a province of Biafra was known as the Golden voice of radio Biafra during the Nigerian Biafran faceoff which lasted from 1967-1970. Chief Okokon Ndem was a legendary and fearless Biafran journalist who through his media prowess tormented the invading Nigerian forces to shivered. In his word "We all abhor a system that marginalises individuals and groups. It is also true that while we cry for equity, there must be a touch of wisdom and diplomacy. With awareness created, bridges should be built and walls destroyed." Late Chief Okokon Ndem was the most popular voice within and outside Biafra during the Biafra genocidal war by the Nigerian government from 1967- 1970. In his mastery of media technicalities, handled the radio Biafra as if the victory of the Biafran forces depended on it. The radio Biafra jingle as at the time "Onye Ndi iro gbara gburu gburu, Na Eche Ndu ya Nche Mgbe Nile", was his most cherished and the popular jingle he frequently played out during the war to keep Biafrans alert and abreast of what is to come. The voice of Okokon Ndem defeated the enemies hundred times even before they face the Biafran forces just as it energises the Biafran forces with hope in a clearer future and morale to face the enemies heads on without fear. Through his broadcasts and professionalism, he drew the world attention to the plight of Biafra to a greater extent. Died on August 2003 and was buried in Calabar on Igbo day festival in September 2003. The former Biafra President Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and other prominent Biafra dignitaries were present at his burial and were sited in Calabar to pay him the last respect to mother earth. We remember late Chief Okokon Ndem for his bravery, passion, resolutions and love for motherland Biafra. We remember him for standing so firm, unshaken by prevailing circumstances of the days, loyal to the cause of Biafra restoration. You answered when duty called to defend mother land beckoned, you never said no to freedom, justice and fairness, you stood with your Mic, like the rock of Gibraltar. You never retreated nor surrendered. Your echoes echoed, still echoing and shall echo till the end of time. Posterity shall never forget you, for all your efforts, Biafra shall be restored. You were an icon we will never forget in a hurry, On 30th of May 2020, the Indigenous People of Biafra must remember the bravest man behind the mic that got Nigerian government to fidget to her marrows.
