BIAFRA: THE PEOPLE OF BIAFRA AND THE NIGERIA CAKE

A Biafran raising the Biafran flag high
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has again made it known that most of those referred to as leaders in Nigeria have lost touch with reality and do not know the desire of the people they claim they are leading. Obasanjo, had earlier referred to those clamoring for the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra as miscreants, but has changed his mind and he is begging Biafrans not to leave Nigeria so they can have their own share of the Nigeria cake. He made his appeal in an event forum in Abuja tagged “Biafra, 50 years after”.

The Nigeria cake baked by British Fredrick Lugard from the resources of Biafra land has been coveted by the northern oligarchy backed by greedy southern politicians without recourse to the people of Biafra whose land the ingredient was gotten. After the Biafra Genocide of 1967-70, in which Olusegun Obasanjo was an active participant for the Nigeria troops, the people of Biafra have continually been treated as slaves even as they worked hard to integrate themselves into Nigeria.

There is no assurance that the people of Biafra will be treated well if they continue to be part of Nigeria because the hatred for them grows at every moment. The enterprising and innovative spirit of Biafrans will continue to be dampened if they remain as part of Nigeria. There is no need forcing a unity that has been proven worthless since the amalgamation of 1914.

Obasanjo, said at the event that Nigeria lacks a national leader which is true because there is no basis for unity and there is no need pretending about it. The amalgamation of Nigeria is the mixture of oil and water; a mixture of feudalism and republicanism, a mixture of Christianity and Islam, a mixture of civilization and barbarism, those mixtures can never join together or be at par with one another.

It is well agreed that most of those clamoring for the restoration of Biafra were not born during the Biafra Genocide but let it be understood that we are going through the same problems that made our grandparents and parents to secede from Nigeria. The Nigeria government and the international community must wake to the realization that this generation of Biafrans wants to exercise their right to self-determination enshrined in the United Nations Universal Charter.

After 50 years of the genocide against the people of Biafra, it is obvious that the issues that caused the secession of Biafra from Nigeria is still there and even on the increase. Biafrans have done so much to show they believe in Nigeria by sojourning and developing other parts of the country but have gotten evil in return. The impoverishment of Biafrans unleashed by the Nigeria government after the genocide through the handing out of only twenty pounds to every Biafran with a bank account did not deter Biafrans from succeeding. Even the Indigenization Decree promulgated to frustrate Biafrans did not stop the people of Biafra from becoming owners of industries and companies.

Still, the Fulani herdsmen and BokoHaram Islamic terrorists have turned the people of Biafra into sacrificial lambs to be slaughtered whenever they feel aggrieved while the Nigeria government watches on. Nepotism and favoritism in the Nigeria government is targeted mostly against Biafrans. Development and infrastructure deficit is common in parts of Biafra land; seaports and refineries in Biafra land are sold out or left to rot away while the roads remain death traps. The rights of Biafrans are not respected as they are killed even while on peaceful protest. Businesses, admission and employment of Biafrans are a herculean task in Nigeria. Biafrans have borne the brunt of the marginalization and subjugation that is synonymous with Nigeria and will no longer take it.

I am glad that the likes of Olusegun Obasanjo and his fellow ‘genocidists’ are alive to see that the seeds of those they exterminated during the genocide has sprout up to hunt them. It is senile to talk about cake sharing instead of apologizing for the atrocities been committed against the people of Biafra. The apology is not actually needed and so is the sharing of cake. Those interested in the Nigeria cake are mostly thieves siphoning the wealth of the country into their personal pocket just like Obasanjo did during his stint as civilian president.

Biafrans are not beating the drums of a second civil war, as been erroneously stated by people of myopic minds rather IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is applying diplomacy and peace in the quest for self-determination but are been killed by the Nigeria security forces. The Nigeria government must be enlightened to act civil and embrace a referendum. The highhandedness against those clamoring for the restoration of Biafra will continue to be a catalyst to the oath sworn which is “Biafra or Death”
