RE: WHO ARE THE IGBO INTELLIGENTSIA? PART ONE

After reading the well written article “WHO ARE THE IGBO INTELLIGENTSIA? PART ONE by Fredrick Onyeali, I could not help but react to it. I will join Mazi Onyeali to give former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chukwuma Charles Soludo, 1% and will be expecting more from him, after his speech at the launching of the book “the Politics of Biafra” written by one Ofodile. Mr Charles Soludo, spoke well but still displayed ignorance by trying to ‘Igbonise’ the current clamor for the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra. I didn’t expect much from him at the book launch which was mostly attended by the political and business class from the Igbo clan. I have often expressed the fact that the clamor for the restoration of Biafra is not about the Igbos alone but consists of every clan in Biafra Land.

Chief Asari Dokubo has often expressed to anyone who wishes to listen that he is a Biafran from the Ijaw clan. Elder statesman and first medical practitioner in Akwa Ibom State, Chief Dr. Thompson Akpabio has also expressed his support to the youths of his clans and has advised them not to allow anyone force them to withdraw their support for Biafra. The peaceful protesters that were gruesomely murdered by the Nigeria armed forces and police, in several protests across Biafra Land, are not only Igbos but included persons from other clans in Biafra. As long as the likes of Charles Soludo continue to ‘Igbonise’ the clamor for the restoration of Biafra, they will never be taken serious by genuine Biafrans.

Mr Charles Soludo has joined the band of persons asking for the whereabouts of the “Igbo elites” in the current clamor for the restoration of Biafra, he also referred to them as “Igbo intelligentsia”. Mazi Fredrick Onyeali ended his piece with a questions as thus: WHO ARE THESE IGBO ELITES OR IGBO INTELLIGENTSIA AND WHAT QUALIFIES THEM TO BE REFERRED AS SUCH?

An Intelligentsia is referred to persons in a country or society who are well educated and are interested in culture, politics, literature, spirituality etc. These persons are often known as ‘elites’ who represent their people because they are endowed with intellect. They are supposed to have the power of understanding and the capacity for the higher forms of knowledge or thought.

It is obvious that those who have often been referred as Igbo elites in Nigeria, lack most of the attributes of an intelligentsia. The so-called Igbo elites have failed their people as they have remained cowardly silent while atrocities are melted on them. Some have decided to establish relationship with the Northern Oligarchy to gain contract at the detriment of their people. What qualified them to be referred as elites, is because they can breeze in and out of the corridors of power in Abuja, assist in silencing their people and do the biddings of the government in power.

The people of Biafra do not need the voice of the so-called Igbo elites to be able to restore their ancestral land. The Indigenous People of Biafra have chosen an Intelligentsia in the person of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to speak for them and he has not failed them even under detention.

It is high time Charles Soludo woke up to reality and chose the path he belongs to and stop sitting on the fence. He must continue to advice the so-called Igbo elites that owns properties and investment outside Biafra Land because they need it the most. As for those parading themselves in Aso Rock as Igbo elites in order to continue with the subjugation of their people, he must advise them to back track from their ways because the day of reckoning is fast approaching for them.

As the political hustlers plans to engage in another jamboree in Uturu, Abia State, I am sure they are truly aware that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are fed up and have taken an oath to restore Biafra or die trying, every effort by self-centered elders from any clan of Biafra Land, to thwart the restoration of Biafra will be resisted.

  1. I wholly agree with you Chinwe. I was disappointed with Prof Charles Soludo's : where are the Igbo Intelligen "shia" that I felt like leaping on the that plat form to tell him, look here sir; the word is pronounced as "cia" and he also kept saying "and so on and so forth". Come on man you are a damn Professor for goodness sake, say it as it is what are you afraid of ? I felt to see which side of the fence he was on because as his speech at the book lunch appeared to dissociate himself with those calling for Biafra restoration. His speech was to my mind, centrist and non committal to say the least or did he not see himself as one of the "INTELLGEN SHIA"?
