In a digitally recorded interview the founders of Customary Government of Biafra which was the idea of three octogenarians (persons) and never the idea of Indigenous People of Biafra was quoted as saying that the reason for the establishment of Customary Government was to take the place of Ohaneze Ndigbo. The group is headed by one unknown Aniegbu but controlled by the three octogenarians who I would not like to have in print lashed out at Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and described the group as failed entity. Speaking to this reporter on its plan, the founders noted that the people of Biafra needed a group that can always stand without the interference of politicians and decide for the people. While they could not rectify their plans; they noted that the group will always fight for the political quota of the people in Nigeria.
The Indigenous People of Biafra may not have won the war against Ohaneze, the group that was widely believed to be anti-people’s group with the position of Customary Government, they will start the war from where Ohaneze ended. Ohaneze might have died and less effective but Customary Government serves as plan B to whatsoever Ohaneze stands for, though according to the founders of the Customary Government, they are convinced that Customary Government will not be handled the way Ohaneze was handled. Speaking to this reporter, the founders stated “Customary Government was formed to place leadership in orderly way. In our land, Elders are the leaders and that is how it should remain” they claimed with strings of concern for leadership and not the total well being of the people of Biafra.
This Customary Government seems not to buy the idea of Youths being the leaders of tomorrow as they are poised to lead the people even from their graves; a move considered as abnormal and poses threat to innovation and the essential risk needed to make a better society. What would America be had she persisted that octogenarians of 90years down would lead and decide for their nation. Sadly, Africa being a place the youths cannot be leaders of tomorrow, in Biafra, there seems to be signs of such philosophy though it was conquered by the ever resolute people of Biafra. Reacting to this the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra denied the group during a Radio Biafra live broadcast “We don’t know or have anything like Customary Government; when Biafra comes, there would be election for the people to choose their government, as for now there is nothing like Government” killing their idea of taking advantage of Biafra restoration project.
“Ohaneze has lost focus, it has been politicized and hijacked by Governors and FG; I pity Ohaneze because they don’t know what they are doing. Should the Governors be controlling them or they should be controlling the Governors. The Governors say what happens and decided for them which should have been the other way round. We founded Ohaneze and when we left the group, it was politicized and destroyed. We decided to found Customary Government to replace Ohaneze and make sure that politicians don’t make use of the people or hold them at ransom. Politics is about win it and claim the laurel; this is why we established Customary Government to control the powers that cage the people” One of the founding member said and when asked about members of the group he could not speak further.
Reacting to this, an executive member noted that the reason Customary Government has no members but executive was because they have not given the group the publicity it needed. And when asked if the group will carry on with some policies of Ohaneze; they noted “The only problem with Ohaneze is politics; it was heavily politicized and hijacked and that is why we established plan B” this however poses another round of battle for the people of Biafra who are always short changed with a group of scavengers who often answer one name and lobby for money and positions.
The major problem that have faced the people of Biafra is selfishness of some people who often stand against the people to make sure their plans succeeded and in most cases, the plans are about political favour and appointments. The group further noted that they want the Customary Government to be the umbrella body for the entire people of old Eastern region. “This is what Ohaneze we founded failed to execute when we left; Governors should not decided for the people through Ohaneze, rather, the Governors and everybody should come under Ohaneze. But due to Ohaneze has been destroyed, we have formed another group and that group is Customary Government”
The founders further noted that Customary Government shall be a political body in Nigeria that shall be effective “The name Biafra in the Government is not illegal because that is our name just like Arewa and Oduduwa. We are Nigerians but will answer Biafra and live our lives like Biafrans in Nigeria; that is what we want to achieve”
