In a recent interaction with a cross-section of Biafrans, during the Biafra memorial day, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, shared details of her latest visit to her husband in Sokoto prison, offering insights that have since generated intense discussion among supporters.
According to Uchechi, popularly known among supporters for referring to her husband as "Onyendu," she found him in good spirits and healthy condition. She reassured Biafrans that despite his continued detention, her husband is doing fine and remains strong.
Speaking with a smile, she described what she called the remarkable hospitality her husband receives while in custody, revealing that several women reportedly line up to serve him meals whenever food is brought to him.
While emphasizing that much of her discussion with her husband remains private, she disclosed one exchange that has since attracted attention.
According to her, Onyendu asked why she appeared unhappy during the visit. In response, she told him directly:
"It is because of some foolish people surrounding you. You need wiser people around you who can give you wise counsel."
The statement has sparked widespread interpretation among Biafrans, with many believing it was a veiled criticism of certain controversial figures within Kanu's inner circle, including some of his close associates, legal advisers, and even members of his family.
Observers argue that her remarks reflect growing concerns among sections of the Biafra movement regarding the quality of advice being given to the detained IPOB leader and the influence some individuals continue to exert around him.
Whether intended as a direct rebuke or simply a wife's candid assessment of her husband's political environment, the comments have added a new dimension to ongoing debates within the movement concerning leadership, loyalty, and the future direction of the Biafra struggle.
