Following recent revelations of alleged financial misappropriation and embezzlement linked to Nnamdi Kanu, I have taken it upon myself, as an investigative writer, to revisit and review major financial transactions connected to Kanu — both within and outside IPOB activities — in order to evaluate the transparency of a man who constantly portrays himself as “whiter than white.”
Unfortunately, every financial review surrounding Kanu raises serious questions about accountability and transparency. Instead of openness, what continues to emerge are allegations of financial irregularities and abuse of trust.
During the global COVID-19 lockdown, Kanu announced on Radio Biafra that IPOB would provide palliatives to struggling families across Biafraland, especially the less privileged who were suffering from hunger caused by the lockdown restrictions.
At the same time, he criticized the Nigerian government for allegedly neglecting the welfare of the people.
It was later reported that IPOB released approximately ₦50 million for the COVID-19 palliative project.
Subsequently, a video surfaced showing a trailer load of rice somewhere in Biafraland, followed by Kanu’s announcement that the rice and other food items distributed across various communities were worth ₦50 million.
Distribution videos later circulated online, showing villagers receiving bags of rice and other supplies.
During several of these distributions, the coordinates of the distributor were heard telling beneficiaries saying things such as:
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has sent us these palliatives to you to reduce the suffering during this COVID-19 period.”
Many observers believed this presentation deliberately personalized the donations around Kanu himself rather than recognizing IPOB members worldwide who allegedly contributed the funds collectively. Critics argued that the exercise became more of a political self-promotion campaign than a transparent humanitarian operation.
However, according to allegations known only to a few insiders at the time, the deeper controversy was not merely about self-promotion but about the source of the distributed items themselves.
It has been alleged that Kanu did not directly use the ₦50 million released by IPOB to purchase the rice and food items distributed during the pandemic. Instead, he allegedly contacted several politicians within the Southeast for support and donations.
Reports further alleged that the then Governor of Ebonyi State donated the trailer load of rice that was eventually distributed to communities.
If these allegations are accurate, then serious questions arise:
What happened to the ₦50 million reportedly released for the COVID-19 palliative project?
Was the IPOB leadership fully informed about the source of the donated items?
Were proper financial records and accountability presented to IPOB members worldwide who contributed the money?
Why was there no transparent breakdown of expenditures?
Critics argue that no clear public accountability was ever provided to IPOB’s leadership structure, including the Directorate of State (DOS), nor to ordinary supporters who contributed financially to the project.
For a leader who claims to be fighting for justice, freedom, and a better future for his people, these unresolved allegations continue to raise difficult questions about integrity, transparency, and accountability.
