Among the countless painful stories that define the Biafran struggle, few are as heartbreaking as the unresolved disappearance of Comrade Solomon Onyegbula—a young man whose only “crime” was his unwavering belief in freedom, justice, and the right of his people to self-determination.
Comrade Solomon Onyegbula, a Biafran patriot, writer, and my correspondent under The Biafra Reporters, where I serve as lead coordinator, was more than just a media activist. He also served as the zonal coordinator of Orlu Senatorial Zone—an exceptionally committed and fearless freedom advocate who dedicated his youth, intellect, and energy to the cause he believed in.
At the time of his abduction, Solomon was a young scholar, a university student awaiting his final clearance, and a known student activist whose voice resonated with courage and conviction.
But on the 8th of March, 2021, tragedy struck.
In broad daylight, at his office located at Kagha Street by Tetlow Road, Owerri, Imo State,
Solomon Onyegbula was allegedly forcefully taken away by men identified as operatives of the Nigeria Department of State Security (DSS).
From that very day… he vanished.
No official charge.
No access to his family.
No communication.
No proof of life.
Only silence.
A silence that has tortured his family for years.
A silence that has turned his mother’s tears into a daily ritual.
A silence that has left his father emotionally broken—living each day between hope and despair.
A silence that has robbed his siblings of peace, his friends of closure, and his comrades of one of their brightest voices.
Every birthday passes without celebration.
Every family gathering carries an empty seat.
Every knock on the door raises hope… only to end in disappointment.
His loved ones do not know whether to pray for his return… or mourn his death.
Following relentless efforts by the IPOB legal team, Solomon’s case of enforced disappearance and gross violation of his fundamental human rights—including freedom of association, assembly, expression, belief, and speech—was brought before the Federal High Court, Abuja, Court 2.
The matter came up for hearing on 22nd February 2022 before Justice Zebi Abubakari.
The DSS appeared before the court… but failed to produce Comrade Solomon.
Outraged by this blatant disregard for justice, Justice Zebi Abubakari ruled that the matter could not proceed without Solomon being physically produced in court and ordered the DSS to produce him unfailingly on the adjourned date of 3rd March 2022.
Yet, in what has become a disturbing pattern of institutional impunity, the DSS not only failed to produce him again—they completely boycotted the court proceedings.
After repeated disobedience to court orders, and after a prolonged legal battle led by Barristers Onwubiko Barba and Ogbaga Nneamaka, the Federal High Court finally ruled in favour of Comrade Solomon Onyegbula—even in his physical absence.
Justice Zebi Abubakari ordered that Comrade Solomon Onyegbula be discharged and acquitted, and awarded compensation of ₦60 million against the DSS for the gross violation of his rights.
Yet…
To this very day…
No proof of life has been presented.
No body has been produced.
No explanation has been given.
No court order has been obeyed.
As we approach 30th May—Biafra Memorial Day, we at The Biafra Reporters use this solemn moment to demand justice.
We call on the Nigeria DSS to immediately obey the judgment of the Federal High Court and produce Comrade Solomon Onyegbula—dead or alive.
If he is alive, let him be released.
If he is dead, let his remains be returned to his family and to IPOB worldwide for a dignified burial.
No family deserves this torture.
No mother deserves endless tears.
No father deserves to die waiting.
No nation can claim justice while its citizens vanish without a trace.
And as we remember our fallen heroes this 30th of May, we also remember Comrade Solomon Onyegbula… and the over 100 others whose stories remain buried in silence.
They may be missing… but they are not forgotten.
“A people who forget the disappeared, prepare the ground for more disappearances.”
