The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the apex sociocultural youth organization of the Igbo race, has urged Southeast governors to declare May 30 as สผBiafra Heroes Dayสผ and observe it as a public holiday in honor of those who died during the 1967–1970 genocide against the Igbo people.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka, and National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ukpabi Michael Authority, the OYC described the day as a necessary commemoration of the over 4.3 million Igbos killed during the war. The group stated that the British government and the then-Nigerian federal government orchestrated the massacre.

The OYC criticized Southeast governors for their “chameleonistic attitude” and called on them to emulate the Yorubas' recognition of June 12 as a day of remembrance. The council demanded that May 30 be marked with symposiums, lectures, and discussions on Igbo economic and political development.

Additionally, the OYC called on Southeast state assemblies to pass a bill formalizing the day as สผBiafra Heroes Dayสผ and urged Igbo professionals abroad to use the occasion to contribute to the region’s development.

The group also demanded the unconditional release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, compensation for his detention, and a national referendum to allow regions to decide their future in Nigeria, which it described as a “failed state.”
