The Nagwamase Military Cantonment, located in Kontagora, Niger State, serves as a key training ground for the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps and is vital to Nigeria’s military readiness. Its seizure has sent shockwaves through the state, underscoring the region’s deteriorating security situation. In addition to occupying the camp, the terrorist groups have also forced approximately 23 farming communities in and around Kontagora and the Mariga local government areas to abandon their homes due to ongoing violence and fear of attacks.
The Assembly reports that the terrorists, who are now occupying vast stretches of land surrounding the military facility, have established at least eight separate camps within the area, using the location as a stronghold from which to launch operations. The dire situation was brought to light during a legislative session on Tuesday, as Abdullahi Isah, a member representing Kontagora II State Constituency, presented a motion of urgent public importance. He described how the terrorist groups have turned the military training site into a base, posing a severe security threat to the surrounding communities. According to Isah, residents have experienced frequent and aggressive attacks, with numerous abductions occurring in recent weeks.
“This military camp, which once served as a hub for national security, has now become a haven for terrorists,” Isah said. “Their presence is a constant threat, endangering the lives of local residents and preventing many who were displaced from returning to their homes.” In response, the Niger State House of Assembly has called on the state government to act swiftly in collaboration with the military to reclaim the camp and restore safety to the region. Lawmakers urged authorities to deploy additional resources to dislodge the terrorist factions, emphasizing that securing the training camp is crucial not only for the safety of the host communities but also for maintaining control over the nation’s critical military infrastructure.
The Assembly stressed that without prompt intervention, the continued occupation of the Nagwamase Military Cantonment could embolden the terrorist groups and lead to even greater instability. Reclaiming the area, they noted, would be essential for allowing the displaced families and farmers to return to their lands, rebuild their lives, and restore a sense of normalcy in the affected communities.
