Her husband, General Philip Efiong was the second in command to General Chukwuma Ojukwu who was the President of Biafra Republic during the bloody Biafran Nigerian civil war.

The civil war lasted from July 1967 – 15 January 1970 with over 3 million civilians killed in the old Eastern region.

However, NewsBand gathered that Josephine Philip Efiong died in Uyo, the capital of Akwa-Ibom State on Tuesday at the age of 89.

A familiar source who confirmed the death said, “We have lost Mrs. Josephine Philip Efiong; the widow of the late General Philip Efiong, the last leader of the Republic of Biafra. She died on 21 May 2024 at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

“She would have been 89 on June 29.”
