BIAFRA: CAN BIAFRA GET A REFERENDUM BY ASKING FOR IT?

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB Supreme Leader, confronting a Nigerian state security agent (Ebonyi State police Commissioner) trying to block his way to evangelize in the state
{What the people of Biafra must do is to persevere; be courageous, be consistent and reliable, they should continue to ask what they are asking and continue to boycott Nigeria. They should never say it is taking too long because too long is the time of materialization. They should never get tired or believe that referendum will come today and by tomorrow they ask why has it not come? They should rather anchor their hope on the fact that Nigeria’s collapse is imminent and living on a borrowed time and how much referendum takes is the amount of her borrowed time. The quickest road to a referendum is war; but if it doesn’t come peacefully, it would eventually come in pieces and the bottom line remains Biafra or death}

While trying to convince me to support election in Biafra land against IPOB’s declaration; a top Nigerian shot asked me this simple question;

“Can Biafra get a referendum by asking for it; how on earth do you think we will give your people chance at referendum?”
I quickly boasted that IPOB will cause constitutional crisis if they boycotted elections and pass a stronger message that they are ready to exit Nigeria with such core and despicable civil disobedience. There is no way election boycott wouldn’t give Biafra restoration momentum; something that is likely to draw another international focus to their cause.

“I seriously don’t think there is anything you can do that would push us to allow a referendum; our international allies are well grounded with us. We will address your actions by our own way or disregard the civil disobedience; it won’t be enough to willfully trigger a referendum. There would be state of emergency at worst until you fizzle out; can’t you see there is no duress?” another government shot said.

This is the most thrusting question that leaves me fuming each time I remember it but I decided to discuss the topic today because each time I look at the mirror, the question keeps coming back to me. I have hardly convinced myself to discuss this question and face the reality no matter how odd or unpleasant it may be but it took a lot for me to gather drive.

I have also decided to dispassionately discuss it and conform to superior argument giving the practical situation we are in. A friend of mine had asked me to start discussing or sensitizing the people of Biafra how to vote in a referendum but that I found rather fast and furious. Referendum must surely come; but I don’t rather want to be unrealistic. I want to prepare the mind of my people; to persevere and know that asking for a referendum without arms in uncivilized country may prove too inflexible.

By demanding a referendum in Nigeria; Nnamdi Kanu is almost bringing 21st century lifestyle or way of existence to a ‘zoo’. Permit me to use the word ‘zoo’; the only problem I see with a call for referendum is the place in which the call was made. Will these animals shouting referendum is a war allow a referendum or take its result without giving Biafra 1967 treatment?

“Can’t you see that these people don’t think like human beings; do you want to be civil while dealing with a barbarian? The best we can do is to get ourselves together, call UN and EU attention and other relevant organizations, conduct our referendum by ourselves and make a case with the result but then prepare for their incursion” a Biafran veteran suggested to me when I hunted his view.

I want to take all the time I have to discuss this topic in the absence of that champion, the leader of IPOB whom I believe understands Nigeria more than I do. He has handled Nigeria and taught her lessons; can he teach them the lesson of referendum? The next in line is - will they be willing to learn or even give a chance? I have always seconded every action from him simply because he has proved beyond doubt that he is capable.

There may be jubilation that Biafra referendum is near; but the people of Biafra must learn to drop emotions and face reality, timing is very important. Referendum should at least be discussed after a successful election boycott which the aftermath may bring good tidings. IPOB just pronounced referendum with election boycott enforced but some being obsessed with Biafra referendum this early morning is feverish; there must be sowing before expecting to reap, the question is what have you sowed? Nnamdi Kanu sowed election boycott to reap referendum and weeding election boycott to produce referendum should be a priority and not focusing on harvest which is referendum.

Referendum is included in International charter as a means of imbedding democracy or taking majority decision where situation has been created. It is a substitution for war; before this age, agitations often end in war or violence but to address such barbarian approach, referendum was set aside.

There is a serious agitation in Nigeria and for the past years Nigeria has not said a word over this agitation but instead deployed her military to extinguish the agitation. Since 1999 Biafra agitation began till this day it is championed by Nnamdi Kanu, over ten thousand Biafran activists have been murdered in cold blood. While the people are murdered; they keep coming out and ready to die more, their leader has vowed to remain peaceful.

The peaceful nature of IPOB has been taken for weakness by the Nigerian establishment; Niger Delta Avengers, a gang of three men were quickly listened to whilst a long and more severe agitation was declined. Nigerian establishment even dared to arrest the agitators instead of engage them in a dialogue and lobby them, this is the height of the insensitivity of the government towards Biafra question. The big question remains; as Nnamdi Kanu is treating them to a class, will he succeed in treating them to referendum, the civilization they should embrace?

Nnamdi Kanu has made it clear that there would be election boycott in Anambra state and entire Biafra land until referendum date is given; that is just a move out of millions of moves toward his quest for referendum. This does not in any form or shape imply that referendum would be given because he has asked for it; it is simply a move towards the quest. When election is successfully boycotted in Biafra land, it would only draw referendum closer and form a step for another move until referendum comes. But let it be clear that second civil war is not excluded from options.

Referendum might quite be denied by Nigerian government even though elections are boycotted but it is noteworthy that we are all asking for condemnation. The battle will not end with election boycott because Nnamdi Kanu will continue to push and apply more desperate measures that will force out referendum.

What the people of Biafra must do is to persevere; be courageous, be consistent and reliable, they should continue to ask what they are asking and continue to boycott Nigeria. They should never say it is taking too long because too long is the time of materialization. They should never get tired or believe that referendum will come today and by tomorrow they ask why has it not come? They should rather anchor their hope on the fact that Nigeria’s collapse is imminent and living on a borrowed time. The quickest road to a referendum is war.
