BIAFRA: SOUTH EAST SENATORS AND THEIR PLANNED VISIT TO NNAMDI KANU IN KUJE PRISON

By Chima Onyekachi
November 17, 2016

From reports made available, South East senators led by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, have decided to visit the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at Kuje Prisons, Abuja. This planned visit is coming after their private meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

Obviously, the senators representing the South East zone in the senate must be elated after severally being ignored by Buhari since he was sworn in as president. I am not bothered about their planned visit to Kuje Prison because I trust Nnamdi Kanu will give them a better enlightenment and knowledge. I am worried that the senators are obviously ignorant of the resolve of the people of Biafra to seek their right to self-determination. While the senators may have forgotten their irrelevancy to the government of Nigeria, I want to inform them that Biafrans have not forgotten their oath to restore Biafra or die trying.

It is pathetic that these men who refer to themselves as” distinguished senators”, are demanding for the commencement of the second River Niger bridge and appointment of Igbos in the National Security Council, but did not raise their voice in the hallowed chamber to make sure a thorough investigation is carried out on the extrajudicial killing of their people by the Nigeria armed forces and police as demanded by Amnesty International. Is the establishment of dry ports and rehabilitation of Enugu International Airport as demanded by them more important than the rights and lives of people in their constituencies?
Where were the South East senators when the 2016 budget was passed and a meagre percentage approved for the development of the South east? They kept silent in their cowardice while large sums of money were approved for the development of the North East continually ravaged by Boko Haram while the South East that is crisis-free has no motorable Federal roads. What plans have these senators ever set in place in their constituencies, to tame the invasion and destruction by Fulani herdsmen terrorists in several communities in the South East?

The release of Nnamdi Kanu is paramount but it is myopic for the South East senators to use it as a precondition to support the $30 billion external loan being sought by the President through the National Assembly. The South East is not even accommodated in the disbursement of the said loan and that should be the protest of the senators to Buhari. Nnamdi Kanu is a prisoner of conscience and has not committed any crime, visiting him in prison to caution him on his utterances will be sheer stupidity as most of what he said has come to fulfillment. Why didn’t the South East senators demand for the rule of law to be respected when courts of competent jurisdictions ordered for his bail and unconditional release and Buhari chose to disobey the court orders.

The South East senators were elected by the people to the Senate to represent them and also to speak on their behalf but the senators have remained so cold while enriching their pockets. The South East Senators had all the time at their disposal to lobby for the construction of rail gauge from Agbor to Onitsha but never did until now. Begging for the construction of extra River Basin Development Authority for the South east from Buhari is an insult to the souls of those that were massacred on May 30th 2016 at Nkpor by the Nigeria armed forces and police. Has Ike Ekweremadu forgotten so soon how he was made to look like a fool on the floor of the senate when he demanded for investigation on that massacre on his people because they gathered to celebrate the heroes and heroine of the Biafra Genocide of 1967-70. If he has, I bet he will not forget the forgery case concocted against him because he emerged as the Deputy Senate President. Ike Ekweramadu should not allow himself to be deceived into pleasing Buhari while helping to destroy his own people.

The popularity of Nnamdi Kanu is the bane of most politicians in the South East and South South.  If their effort to release Nnamdi Kanu is to take advantage of the struggle, they shall be resisted. The South East and South South legislators must wake up to the reality that their people are no longer interested in the forced unity in Nigeria. The Senators and members of House of Representatives are supposed to be in the forefront to propagate the rights of their people to self-determination. It is time for the voice of the people to be heard, the people of Biafra have protested peacefully and have been killed by the Nigeria government, they have shown they will die to get their freedom. Woe betides any politician that wants to stop them.
