Information from a Rivers government insider says that a few minutes ago, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in the company of other governors of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, have “stormed” the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt.
The access to the government house has been opened following the governors’ arrival.
“Democracy will not die in Nigeria! PDP insists on holding the national convention,” the source told The Trent.
Read our earlier report on this developing story below:
The Nigerian police, said to be acting on the orders of the newly appointed inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris, as taken steps to restrain members of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the main opposition party in Nigeria from accessing the venue of the party’s national convention.
The inspector general of police, has been restrained by an order of a federal high court from interfering with the conduct of the PDP’s national convention slated for the morning of Wednesday, August 17, 2016.
“By this action, the inspector general of police is setting the stage for crisis in Nigeria by demonstrating in clear terms that the rule of law no longer prevails,” a member of the PDP e-mailed to The Trent a few minutes ago.
“This is happening under General Muhammadu Buhari’s command in a democracy. The world is alerted to the violations of the rights of Nigerians by the Buhari regime! By their very hands they are setting the stage for anarchy in Nigeria.”
We have obtained photos of the police action at the Rivers State government house which projects a sign of anarchy and reckless endangerment. A police tank rammed into a vehicle at the Rivers State government house.
“The PDP, armed with valid and superior court orders is determined to hold it lawful convention today and it shall,” the email, by a member of the party who didn’t wish to be named said.
Mr. Lere Olayinka, a PDP member and media aide to Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, also contacted The Trent with the message below, a few minutes ago:
“Even roads leading to the Old Presidential Lodge and the Deputy Governor Lodge are blocked with Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). In short, Rivers State Govt House is sealed partially” he wrote.
“They [the police] claimed to be obeying Abuja Court Order, which INEC said it had not seen as at yesterday [Tuesday] night.
“If you still think Ali Modu Sheriff is alone in his bid to collapse the PDP, na you know. As for me, I knew it before now that it is the All Progressives Congress, APC federal government (Powered by Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai) that is behind Sheriff and dishing out court orders to kill PDP,” he maintained.
