The desperation of the Nigeria government to thwart the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra does not in any way surprise me. The most recent action of creating an imaginary splinter group named – The Re-branded Indigenous People of Biafra, TRIOPOB, is very much laughable. The so-called TRIOPOB, through its spokesman, Chima Philip Effiong Osuji, has said the struggle for the restoration of Biafra is not feasible. He also disclosed that the new group will denounce the struggle on October 1,2016; by burning the Biafra flag, recite Nigeria’s national anthem and pledge in Abuja. According to Osuji, the spirit and intent of Biafra will be pursued inside the Nigerian nation and a new Biafra flag will be unveiled.

The defunct Supreme Elders’ Council of IPOB is also seeking relevance by the formation of a Customary Government of Biafra, with the sole aim of been referred to as Biafrans while remaining citizens of Nigeria. The so-called Customary Government of Biafra is mostly made up of octogenarians who felt slighted by the emergence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB and Director of Radio Biafra/Biafra Television. Nnamdi Kanu’s acceptance by Biafrans all over the world frightened and threatened the existence of these self-serving elders, who are more interested in been recognized than the freedom of their people.

The mission of the so-called Customary Government of Biafra and TRIOPOB, is to create confusion amongst Biafrans and destabilize the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra. These groups are being paid by the Nigeria government, just like it was done in the resurrection of MEND and the creation of a splinter group of the Niger Delta Avengers. The Nigeria government having seen that intimidation, arrest, abduction and killing of Biafrans did not deter them from asking for their freedom, have embarked on funding groups to fight against the Indigenous People of Biafra led by Nnamdi Kanu.

The people of Biafra are solidly behind their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and his continued incarceration is directly influencing their resoluteness in the struggle for the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra. The Customary Government of Biafra and TRIOPOB must understand they are entitled to their choice of wanting to remain in Nigeria as Biafrans but must act civilly by campaigning for a referendum. The Indigenous People of Biafra must be allowed to make their choice in a civilized manner via a referendum. TRIOPOB may wish to go ahead with their plan of burning of Biafra flag, but that action will surely steer the passion of Biafrans to restore their fatherland. The struggle for the restoration of Biafra is an ideology and has become a religion to many.
