The Office of the Biafraland National Leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, has issued a warning ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, declaring that the organisation should not be associated with election-boycott threats, sit-at-home orders or any action capable of threatening the peace and safety of the people.
In a Warning Memorandum signed by Mazi Expensive, IPOB Homeland National Publicity Secretary, the organisation said its position was necessary ahead of the 2027 elections and other electoral exercises that may take place in Biafraland.
The statement alleged that some individuals associated with groups accused of having previously killed members of the public had begun using IPOB’s name to threaten people in connection with demands for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
According to the memorandum, IPOB supports the peaceful demand for Kanu’s release, particularly over what it describes as concerns surrounding his rendition or extradition to Nigeria and his subsequent detention.
However, the leadership stressed that support for Kanu’s release “must never be interpreted as a licence to expose our people to another cycle of violence.”
IPOB distances itself from election boycott threats
The memorandum specifically addressed alleged pronouncements from the Sokoto Micro-waved so-called DOS, suggesting that the 2027 elections should be boycotted, disrupted or resisted through compulsory sit-at-home orders if Kanu is not released.
The Biafraland National Leadership declared four key positions:
- IPOB is not an electoral boycott organisation.
- IPOB should not be associated with threats intended to prevent people from exercising their lawful choices.
- IPOB should never be associated with sit-at-home orders designed to compel compliance through fear.
- IPOB should never be associated with actions capable of provoking confrontation between Biafrans and Nigerian security agencies.
The leadership further stated that its current approach under the Edoziem-led Directorate of State is strongly opposed to what it described as avoidable deaths in Ala-Igbo and Biafraland.
Leadership calls for preservation of peace
The statement pointed to what it described as a return of peace to many communities across the Southeast, saying residents deserve the opportunity to live, work, travel and conduct their legitimate affairs without fear.
It warned Biafrans against attempts to introduce another cycle of disorder into the region under any justification.
“Our people have died enough, and mostly out of careless directives of the leader in the past,” the memorandum stated, while urging members and supporters to protect the relative peace that communities have experienced.
The statement comes as political activities are expected to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, placing the question of IPOB’s relationship with electoral participation, sit-at-home directives and political pressure firmly back into public discussion.
The memorandum makes clear that, under the leadership identified in the document, IPOB does not want its name used to threaten voters, enforce election boycotts or impose compulsory sit-at-home orders, while maintaining support for a peaceful demand for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
