Gowon was the main actor of the genocidal war that claimed the lives of over 5 million Biafrans between 1967-1970. On January 15th 1966, a group of young military officers from across Nigeria carried out a coup d’etat, that toppled the government of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. British government propaganda radio, the BBC, maliciously peddled the evil narrative that the coup was an Igbo coup. This evil narrative set-off a series of pogrom against Igbos especially in northern Nigeria, including a bloody counter coup by northern officers that eventually led to the genocidal Biafra war.

Former Nigeria military ruler, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), in his recently launched book titled “A Journey in Service” (2025), stated clearly that the January 15th 1966 coup was not an Igbo coup. This confession in his book is not a new fact, many authors have stated the same fact over the years. In the book, “Why we Struck” (1981), Major Adewale Ademoyega, a Yoruba man from Ode Remo in Ogun state, who was one of the five prominent officers that were involved in the January 15th 1966 coup. Ademoyega revealed that the coup was not an Igbo coup but rather a revolution; to remove corrupt Balewa government, stop the political killings in the Yoruba land and Tiv land, and install Obafemi Awolowo (a Yoruba man from Ikenne, Ogun state) as the Prime Minister of Nigeria. This account has been collaborated by many other authors like former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in his book, “Nzeogwu” (1987), Ben Gbulie, one of the coup plotters, in his book, “Nigeria’s Five Majors” (2017), just to mention a few. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has stated on multiple occasions that the events of January 15th 1966 was not an Igbo coup.

As a consequence of this false evil narrative, Ndigbo have been marginalised and persecuted in Nigeria. Now, it is time for Gowon to speak and tell the world the truth that the events of January 15th 1966 was never an Igbo coup. He cannot claim ignorance of this fact because he was one of the three-man investigative board that was instituted by General Aguiyi Ironsi to uncover the motives, intentions, and long term objectives of the failed coup (Biafra Revisited, 2006). This three-man board was made up exclusively of northern officers; M.D. Yusuf (head of special branch), Col. Yakubu Gowon (appointed by Aguiyi Ironsi as Chief of Army Staff), and Captain Baba Usman (Military Intelligence). The board carried out an extensive 3-month investigation, that involved interrogating around 200 military personnel, including principal leaders of the coup. They reviewed vital coup documents retrieved from all over the country. They concluded that the coup was restricted strictly to the military, with no civilian involvement. There was no evidence whatsoever to suggest or indicate it was a south or Igbo coup. It was unfortunate, that the same Gowon, a member of this investigative board, along with other northern officers carried out the bloodiest coup in the history of Nigeria, against his boss Aguiyi-Ironsi on July 29th 1966. Gowon and his group, murdered Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, Col Adekunle Fajuyi and 300 other Igbo officers in a coup they termed “revenge coup”. Gowon after his bloody coup supressed the release of the Gowon-Usman-Yusuf investigative report that concluded that January 15th 1966 was never an Igbo coup.

Subsequent Nigerian governments have followed this path of deceit and dishonour, and have continued to supress the publication of the Gowon-Usman-Yusuf investigative report of 1966. I ponder how Gowon sleeps at night, knowing the truth of this report since its submission 59 years ago and 55 years after the end of the genocidal war he waged against the Igbos. It is time for Gowon to free himself and the generations to come by going public with the truth that January 15th 1966 was never an Igbo coup. If he finds writing a book too burdensome, he should release the Gowon-Usman-Yusuf report of 1966 to the public. Should Gowon fail to take this opportunity to tell the world the truth, I urge President Bola Amed Tinubu to follow the example of President Trump of the US, and declassify the Gowon-Usman-Yusuf report to the public. This will finally end the evil conspiracy against the Ndigbo and possibly open a new era for the indigenous peoples of Nigeria.

IPOB Press Release

Published on the Biafra Post

November 19, 2022

We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably lead by the great and indefatigable leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU wish to disassociate IPOB and ESN from the gruesome murder of the Traditional Ruler of Obudi Agwa in Oguta Local Government  Area of Imo State.

It is in the public domain, the records of how Hope Uzodinma used his Ebubeagu militia in the mindless  massacre of many Izombe indigens.

Today the Imo Vampire, Hope Uzodima has directed his murderous Ebubeagu militia to eliminate an innocent Traditional Ruler for condemning his killing of his people and burning of their houses. Hope Uzodima is an agent of destruction and darkness for the same people he forced himself to become their Governor.

He recruited notorious armed and criminal militias including Niger Delta militants to murder and destroy the properties of innocent civilians who don't support his Fulanization agenda in Imo State.

It is unfortunate that Nigeria media  do not conduct  independent investigations before publishing their news reports. We are aware that Hope Uzodinma regularly hosts some willing News editors for dinner to luander and promote his criminalities in the State. Hope Uzodinma should tell the world the crime committed  by the Traditional Ruler that  warranted his murder.

HRH Eze (Dr) Ignatius Asor of Obudi Agwa of Oguta LGA had no problem with IPOB and ESN. IPOB and ESN don't kill our own. The Royal Father was murderered by Hope Uzodinma's Ebubeagu militia because the man asked him to stop his murderous actions against his subjects.

IPOB has no hand in this barbarism and we cannot be involved in killing innocent citizens of Biafra that we are dying and going to prison to save. We commiserate with the families of the Monarch and those murdered in cold-blood at Obudi Agwa in Oguta LGA, Imo State.

The Command spokesman of police in Imo State, CSP Micheal Abattam should stop their usual public deception and properly investigate and identify the killers of this Royal Father instead of falsely blaming IPOB and ESN. The game of arranging innocent people and have them to falsely claim to be IPOB members or ESN operatives so as to justify their blackmail is over.

We are urging all Traditional Rulers and Religious Leaders in Biafraland to understand that there is danger and all should beef up their personal security. There is danger ahead because our enemies are relentlessly extorting and waging war against our leaders.

COMRADE EMMA POWERFUL, MEDIA AND PUBLICITY SECRETARY FOR IPOB.

Biafra post

October 1st 2022

Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor the lead counsel to IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has clarify Biafrans on the rumors making round that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be appearing in court on Tuesday October 4,2022 .

According to Ifeanyi Ejiofor in a statement he released via his Facebook wall,  reads as follows :

ONYENDU MAZI NNAMDI KANU IS NOT GOING TO COURT ON THE 4TH DAY OF OCTOBER, 2022, BEING TUESDAY NEXT WEEK:

For the purpose of clarification, the Fundamental Rights Suit, filed on behalf of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court Umuahia, Abia State, is scheduled for Ruling on jurisdictional issues raised suo motu by the Court, on the 4th day of October, 2022.

Let the members of the general public be properly informed and appropriately guided, that we have the firm instruction of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to inform the public, of freedom and UmuChineke, that Onyendu will not be coming to Court on the 4th day of October, 2022.

As such, Onyendu neither directed, approved nor authorized anyone to declare a sit-at-home on that date.

Members of the general public are advised to go about their normal business activities on this said date. This clarification has become compelling and necessary, in view of the avalanche of misleading information on the social media, and plethora of calls I have received from concerned UmuChineke to this effect.

We have assured UmuChineke that we shall inform you any time Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is scheduled to appear in Court.

It is to be noted too, that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has several suits pending against the Federal Government of Nigeria, her agencies and officials, in various courts across the Country. For instance, the main Suit challenging the extraordinary rendition of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, filed before the Federal High Court Abuja, against the Federal Republic of Nigeria & Anor, in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/462/2022, and the Suit challenging the constitutionality or otherwise of the 2022 Practice Direction on the trial of terrorism offences, filed against the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court & Anor, in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/550/2022, are equally coming up for Hearing next week, before Hon. Justice Ekwo of Court No. 5, Federal High Court Abuja.

However, kindly note that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, still NEVER APPROVED nor AUTHORIZED that on the said dates, the members of the general public be directed to sit at home.

Please let us be properly and adequately guided. This should be a period for serious circumspection and focus, we should not allow those who have no interest of the present fate of Onyendu to derail us.
Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU is passing through his present ordeal because of his earnest desire to emancipate his people from any form of suffering or oppression, there is therefore, no way he will support anything that will bring more hardship on the same people he is suffering for.

Thank you all, UmuChineke and remain blessed.

Signed:
Sir ifeanyi Ejiofor, Esq. (KSC)
IPOB’s Lead Counsel.
1st October, 2022.
